This is why Warsop councillors say a new £250,000 cash boost will make a big difference to local kids

Warsop councillors say a bumper £250,000 community cashpot will help make a big difference to the lives of youngsters living in the village.

The welcome funding boost has been awarded by East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward to help Warsop Parish Council carry out community initiatives through their Future Warsop project.

About a third of the £252,868 being stumped up will go towards replacing the roof of The Shed, which plays home to a thriving youth club.

“It has been leaking for a few years now, so it will completely change the reliability and safety of the building,” said Coun Grant Simpson, of Warsop Parish Council.

“Part of the money will also see us get a new youth club to help with anti-social behaviour and provide activities for the older kids as well.

“Vulnerable kids can always come to The Shed, it is their safe place. On average we get 80 to 100 kids through the door for a session. You can imagine what would happen if those sorts of numbers were out on the streets.

“We are providing them with indoor activities such as pool, indoor football, free wi-fi music, all the things kids that age want to do.”

Councillors say the cash will also be used to develop new play facilities at the Swallows Green park with local folk at the heart of the plans.

Coun Jack Stephenson, district councillor of Market Warsop for Mansfield District Council, said: “It hasn’t been designed yet, but the idea is we will have some inclusivity in there and play equipment that kids will want to use.

“It is something we are not looking to drag our feet over. There has to be a design consultation, but we are already engaging with schools, scouts and various different children’s groups to see what they want.

“We hope it will be early next year so we can get the equipment in for next spring or summer.”

Market Warsop is one of 10 neighbourhoods across the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) area chosen for investment after being identified as facing high levels of disadvantage and having fewer local community and voluntary organisations than other areas.

Mayor Claire Ward said: “I’m incredibly proud to see this funding going directly into the heart of communities that deserve it most. Local people know their neighbourhoods better than anyone and these projects show exactly what can be achieved when we back their ideas and ambitions.

“This investment will make a real and lasting difference to people’s lives. By supporting community-led projects like these, we’re building stronger, healthier neighbourhoods, boosting pride in place and ensuring everyone across our region has the chance to share in its future.”
