Sutton dog owner praises vets who saved border collies poisoned by mouldy garden waste

Chris Thompstone feared the worst for both Chance and Tia, four and one, until the intervention of the emergency team at Paragon Veterinary Referrals in Wakefield.

A toxin made by fungi found in mouldy garden and food waste can cause life-threatening tremors in dogs, a condition known as tremorgenic mycotoxicosis.

Chris said: “They were having seizures and had collapsed and were rushed to Paragon as they were both critical and not responding.

“I cannot praise Paragon enough for their care and expertise, I have no doubt that without them I would've lost both dogs.”

Ben Safrany, an internal medicine specialist, was first to examine the patients.

Ben said: “Both of them were in a critical condition when they arrived here and were having dramatic and continuous tremors.

“Chance was especially unwell so we quickly transferred the two of them to the intensive care unit.”

Chance and Tia remained there for two days being treated with a combination of muscle relaxants, sedatives, anaesthetic medication, intravenous fluids and oxygen.

Ben said: “They received care from six vets, a specialist in anaesthesia, and a huge number of nurses to give them the 24-hour intensive care they needed to survive.

“Both have since made full recoveries which is testament to the excellent collaboration between the staff here at Paragon.”
