For this retro feature, we are taking a closer look at the history of Mansfield Town Football Club (COYS).

Although organised football had been played in Mansfield for many years prior, the current club's origins can be traced back to 1897, specifically to the Wesleyan Church on Bridge Street.

Mansfield made it to Wembley for the first time ever on Sunday, May 1987, and many fans still consider it to be the best day in the club's history. The 1987 Associate Members' Cup Final, also known as the Freight Rover Trophy due to sponsorship reasons, was the fourth final of a domestic football cup competition for teams from the Third Division and Fourth Division. The final took place at Wembley Stadium in London on May 24, 1987, featuring Bristol City and Mansfield Town. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time, and Mansfield Town triumphed in the penalty shootout.
