9. Creswell Crags
Creswell Crags, near Worksop, has a glowing reputation as a fascinating tourist-attraction. But some of its caves are believed to have been occupied by witches after the discovery of hundreds of witches' marks. These marks were created by locals in the 17th or 18th century to prevent devils, witches, demons and evil spirits rising from the underworld. Photo: Brian Eyre

10. Bestwood Lodge
Now a successful hotel, Bestwood Lodge was the love nest in the 17th century of King Charles II and his mistress, Nell Gwynn, an actress and orange-seller. Many visitors have reported ghostly encounters, including the smell of oranges, figures disappearing into thin air and the sound of voices coming from the cellar. Photo: Submitted

11. Nottingham Castle
The recent revamp of Nottingham Castle, which sits high above the city, is unlikely to have disturbed the ghost of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl Of March. He was de facto ruler of England for three years in the 14th century after leading a revolt against King Edward II and having an affair with the queen, Isabella. He was captured during a daring raid on the castle and was later executed. Photo: Submitted

12. George's Hill, Calverton
The village of Calverton is renowned for celebrating its haunted locations. And nowhere more so than George's Hill which, even to this day, is said to be avoided by taxi drivers after dark.
