These photos show a Spitfire roaring through the sky above King’s Mill Hospital on Saturday - marking the NHS’ 72nd birthday.

The iconic WW2 fighter plane - painted with the message ‘Thank U NHS’ on the underside of its wings - was on the Nottinghamshire leg of a flypast of hospitals throughout the country.

Family-owned firm The Aircraft Restoration Company - based at the Imperial War Museum - started the aircraft’s journey from Duxford Airfield.

Over the next few months the company will be flying the revered plane over hospitals across mainland UK - raising money for NHS Charities Together.

As part of the campaign the Spitfire will be decorated with names of those who have given all to help others during the Covid-19 pandemic - with space on its fuselage for up to 80,000.

Matt Stephenson, 31, who watched the plane soar at about 250ft above the hospital on Saturday described it as ‘lovely to see - especially as it was giving thanks to the heroes of the NHS’.
