Sherwood Forest MP welcomes constituents to Westminster for UK Parliament week

As part of UK Parliament Week, Sherwood Forest MP Michelle Welsh (Lab) welcomed a coach trip of local constituents to London for a behind-the-scenes tour at Westminster.

The trip to Parliament included a guided tour of the historic Palace of Westminster where constituents were able to visit places that are not usually open to the public, including the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft.

The group even got a chance to look inside the broom cupboard where suffragette Emily Davison famously hid during the 1911 census.

The group of 25 constituents also joined Ms Welsh in a committee room for an open Q&A session where topics ranged from local issues and national policy, to the day-to-day realities of being an MP.

This session offered a rare chance for residents to question and speak directly with their MP in an informal setting.

To conclude the visit, constituents then had the opportunity to sit in the public gallery to hear Ms Welsh speak in the House of Commons chamber on the importance of proper infrastructure – GPs and schools in particular – in places which have seen recent development, such as Hucknall, Edwinstowe and Rainworth.

Ms Welsh said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome constituents to Parliament.

"Parliament belongs to the public and opportunities like this help bring democracy to life.

“I’m always grateful for the chance to meet residents, hear their views and show them the work we do on their behalf.

"I look forward to hosting more visits in the future.”
