Adam Cooper, 32, recently completed his seventh marathon in July and has already raised £487 to spread awareness of the condition Encephalitis, after it affected someone close to him.

The condition, in which the brain tissue becomes inflamed, is usually caused by an infection.

It can be life-threatening and some people do make full recoveries over a long period of time but unfortunately, many people never make a full recovery and are left with long term problems caused by the damage to their brain. Symptoms can include fever, headache, stiff neck, hallucinations and sensitivity to light.

Adam said: “I decided to raise money for encephalitis as it's an illness I’ve unfortunately witnessed closely with one of the most important people in my life suffering a severe case of this rare disease. Thankfully they made a full recovery and are living their life to the fullest.

“For many though, they are not so lucky, I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through this situation and witness their loved ones go through this without the help and support we all deserve in our times of need.”

In the past, Adam had completed running challenges including The Tough Mudder Midlands half so with his running background it made sense for him to do something he is passionate about whilst raising funds for a worthy cause.

He had planned to take part in different marathon events across the country and even aimed to run the Loch Ness Marathon in Scotland but these events were cancelled in March as a result of Covid-19.

Instead, Adam decided to complete virtual marathons from April onwards, which involved running around the local area and then receiving a medal once the proof has been submitted.

In May, he completed the May The Fourth Be With You virtual marathon at home by repeatedly running from garden to kitchen to living room whilst simultaneously watching the Star Wars trilogy.

Adam said: “My motivation is knowing I’m raising money for a worthy cause.

“It’s a beautiful feeling to know that the money I raise, even if I don’t reach my target could potentially make an impact or save someone's life.

“Life is short but if you can help people along the way, why wouldn’t you want to do something worthwhile.”

Adam’s next marathon is due to be completed on Saturday, August 16 at around midnight.

Adam added: “I’ve always got to give massive thanks to the people who are supporting me through this challenge whether it’s through the donations, comments or social media shares to spread the awareness.

“Without these people, I wouldn’t have raised the funds I already have, I am truly blessed to have so much support over the past 7 months.”
