Police officers deliver road safety message to Eastwood sixth formers

Neighbourhood officers visited an Eastwood school to remind new and learner drivers about the potential risks of life on the roads.

PC Gerard Masaoy and PCSO Amy Tinkler attended Eastwood Academy on Friday, June 5, to speak with sixth form students about the Fatal 4 – speeding, mobile phone use, driving under the influence, and not wearing a seatbelt.

The duo, based at Eastwood Police Station on Nottingham Road, are delivering a series of talks and practical demonstrations to young people over the summer months.

In addition to general road safety advice, the sessions also include instruction on what to do in the event of a road traffic collision.

PC Masaoy said: “We know that young drivers are at increased risk of being involved in serious collisions – partly because of their inexperience and partly because of an increased appetite for risk.

“We also know that more and more younger drivers are now using their cars to earn money in the gig economy, which increases the risks further.

“These sessions are about talking through those risks and explaining some of the everyday consequences of breaking the law behind the wheel – such as the revocation of a young driver’s licence after accumulating six points.

“As neighbourhood officers, this kind of engagement and education is a core part of our work, and I am looking forward to delivering many more sessions in the future.”
