Notts Police urge drivers not to leave gifts and valuables on show in run-up to Christmas
Nottinghamshire Police is urging drivers to make sure they don’t leave any last-minute presents or other valuables on display in their cars to avoid falling victim to opportunistic thieves in the run-up to Christmas.
Over the last year, between January 1, to December 15, the police have seen an overall 44 per cent increase in recorded vehicle interference crimes, amounting to nearly 600 incidents, with most of the neighbourhood policing areas seeing a rise in this crime type.
Notts Police don’t want anyone’s Christmas to be ruined by criminals on the look-out for an easy target so they are reminding drivers to ensure nothing is left on show in their cars which could tempt criminals and to make sure they keep their vehicles locked.
Inspector Sam Birch, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We’re urging people to be vigilant and make it as difficult as possible for criminals to target their vehicles, especially in the run-up to Christmas.

“Having your car broken into and losing your things to thieves can be very distressing, however there are a few simple steps you can take to keep your vehicle, and what’s in it, safe.
“When shopping, you should ensure your vehicle is locked and any valuables left in cars are removed from sight.
“We're also urging local residents to report any suspicious people or vehicles to us immediately by calling 101. If an incident is in progress call 999.
“Where possible ensure that your vehicle is parked on your driveway or in your garage if you have one. Alternatively, ensure your vehicle is parked in a well-lit, secure area.
“Having an alarm and immobiliser fitted to your vehicle is also an effective way of deterring criminals.”
