Filming of this atmospheric and sometimes gory retelling of the legendary classic took place in Northern Ireland rather than here in ‘Robin Hood county’.

The film, written and directed by Michael Sarnoski shows Robin Hood played by Jackman grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder.

Finding himself gravely injured after a battle he thought would be his last Robin Hood finds himself in the hands of a mysterious woman (Comer) and he is offered a chance at salvation.

Speaking about the film to the BBC Jodie Comer who plays Sister Brigid, a healer and the prioress of a rural nunnery, said: "There’s a brutality to it but also a real tenderness to it I found. Michael Sarnoski is not painting him out to be a villain or a hero for me this is an incredibly nuisance exploration or a man who is at a much later stage in his life and has been faced with his own morality and is very reflective of the life he has lived and the consequences of his actions so I think it’s much more tangible and feels like a much more human exploration than what feels like a myth and kind of unattainable in a way.”

The legend of Robin Hood and his band of merry outlaws living in Sherwood Forest has become the stuff of folklore, passed down from generation to generation and synononomous with Nottinghamshire.
