New project aims to investigate mystery at historic Bolsover site

The Old Bolsover Yard, next to Bolsover Castle has secured £16,800 by National Lottery Funding, to look into the town’s butchers and ancillary businesses that provided the community with its food from the Yard.

Little is known about the area of the Yard where food was prepared, so the funding will go into uncovering stories about the area.

It will also explore the medieval heritage that lies beneath the yard with a community dig, not just as a conservation area but an Area of Archaeological Interest.

A small community dig at the rear of the Yard is planned in late spring, with participating children involved from a local school.

Old Bolsover Yard recently changed ownership and has been opened to the public.

New small business starter units were opened in the former butchering buildings which had been locked up since 1927.

Sarah Smith, owner of the yard said: “We’re delighted that we’ve received this support thanks to National Lottery players. The 18 month funding programme will allow us to fully research, document and tell the story of an intriguing and interesting part of our town as yet untold. The fact it lies so close to the town centre and Bolsover Castle may reveal some surprises.”

The project will commence in February and last 18 months.

And, research will be published in a booklet and an exhibition to celebrate the hidden gem.
