The site will be based at the Forest Road car park in the town and will be open Monday and Thursday, from 10am-5.30pm.

News of its arrival in the town comes as around one in three people infected with Covid-19 are asymptomatic and could potentially spread the disease without knowing it.

The test is designed to identify anyone who may have the virus and who may be, unwittingly, putting their colleagues, households or support bubbles at risk.

Working aged-residents with no symptoms and who have to travel to work are being encouraged to take advantage of the unit.

Health chiefs say no appointments are necessary at the testing site but when folk arrive they will be asked to register to get their results.

The test only takes a few seconds and within 40 minutes the result will be delivered directly to a person’s smartphone if they have one.

Coun David Lloyd, leader of Newark & Sherwood District Council said: “By giving access to communities without testing sites, the new mobile unit will help towards a smooth transition out of lockdown for all of our communities.

“The quick and simple test could help save lives. It really is that important.

"Even if you feel completely well and believe you have not come into contact with anyone, you could still be carrying Covid-19 which could be spread to others.

"One simple test could prevent a number of people in our community becoming extremely unwell.”
