New council PlayZone facility in Selston moves a step closer

Work to upgrade play facilities at Selston High School have been given the green light by Ashfield Council.

The council has approved £1.5m plans to bring ‘Premier League’ sports facilities to five Ashfield sites – including Selston – to create new PlayZones.

The council will be working in partnership with the Football Foundation to deliver the programme, which is due to be completed in 2027.

PlayZones are new or refurbished outdoor mini pitches, designed for football and other sports, aimed at tackling inequalities in physical activity and access to facilities.

They are a floodlit multi-use games area with built-in goalposts, basketbakkhoops and/or nets and surfaced with tarmac or a synthetic surface.

For Selston, the plan is to refubish the existing facilities at the High School.

The main priority groups the Football Foundation want to work with include women and girls, people living with a long-term health condition or disability and ethnically diverse communities.

The council’s programme will also see existing facilties refurbished at Cowpasture Rec in Leamington and Tichfield Park in Hucknall, while new facilties will be created at Stamper Rec in Skegby and Morven Park in Kirkby.

The Football Foundation will provide 75 per cent of the build costs and technical expertise throughout the process.

Coun Chris Huskinson (Ash Ind), executive lead for leisure, health and wellbeing, said: “This is an exciting project providing top class sporting facilities to residents across Ashfield and I can’t wait to see the PlayZones completed.

“This is part of the council’s commitment to making Ashfield a happy and healthy place to live and work.”

The work is planned to start in the autumn and be completed in 2027.
