Mororgreen mining heritage celebrated at Colliers Wood

Colliers Wood Nature Reserve in Moorgreen has been enhanced by a series of improvements, culminating in the installation of a new memorial celebrating the site’s rich mining and industrial heritage.

Recovered mining artefacts including a mine car and pulley wheel salvaged from former Moorgreen Colliery at the site, have been carefully restored and painted in their original underground light grey.

Positioned alongside two half winding wheels already on site, they create a striking focal point that honours the area’s industrial past while providing a space for community gatherings, including outdoor art and craft activities.

Accompanying these old mining relics is a new interpretation board explaining the history of mining in the local area, as well as a memorial, listing the names of miners who lost their lives at Moorgreen Colliery, both of which were unveiled at an event on May 13.

This builds on a series of improvements made to Colliers Wood over the past 18 months.

The main circular route has been resurfaced, improving accessibility and enabling year-round use in all weather, while a new viewing platform over the main pond allows visitors to step out over the water and better experience the site’s wildlife.

Coun Milan Radulovic (Brox All), Broxtowe Council, leader, said, “Reclaiming Colliers Wood and converting it into a local nature reserve was one of my first projects after I became council leader in 1995 and it’s been such a joy to see it through to what it’s become today.

"As we approach 30 years since the site was reopened, it’s important that we continue to recognise and preserve the site’s industrial heritage.

“Broxtowe borough’s mining history still holds a firm place in the hearts of many of our residents, and I’m proud of the work we continue to do to honour it at Colliers Wood.

"These new additions provide a meaningful way to remember those who sadly lost their lives, while keeping this important part of our local culture alive.”

Alan Green, chairman of Friends of Colliers Wood, said: “We are delighted with the new memorial and the continuing investment by Broxtowe Council in the local nature reserve, both honouring the site’s mining and industrial heritage while supporting the mission to recreate the landscape that once existed."

With its blend of heritage, nature and improved accessibility, Colliers Wood continues to offer a space for both reflection and recreation for residents and visitors alike.
