Mansfield's mayor marks Prince Philip's 73 years 'devoted public service'

Andy Abrahams said: “We are extremely saddened by the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and join the nation in a period of mourning.

“On behalf of Mansfield District Council and the residents of Mansfield, I extend my sincere condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and the entire Royal Family.

“We are grateful for The Duke of Edinburgh’s 73 years of devoted public service as a constant companion and support to Her Majesty the Queen. We will fondly remember his charitable work and the positive impact The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has on so many young people.”

His Royal Highness, accompanying the then Princess Elizabeth, first visited Mansfield in June 1949 to lay the foundation stone at Portland Training College.

He visited the town again in July 1977 as part of The Queen’s tour of her realm to mark her silver jubilee. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh opened the new public library and met with members of the public on Westgate and the Market Place.

The Union Flag at the Civic Centre is at half-mast.

In accordance with public health advice, members of the public are asked to continue to follow the current Government coronavirus guidelines, particularly on avoiding meeting in large groups and on minimising travel, to keep themselves and others safe.

Members of the public may wish to consider making a donation to a charity of their choice, or one of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Patronages in memory of His Royal Highness, instead of leaving floral tributes.

Whilst the laying of flowers is being discouraged due to the Covid pandemic, anyone who wishes to leave flowers, is asked to lay unwrapped flowers at the Cenotaph in the car park at Mansfield Civic Centre, off Rosemary Street. Please follow Covid guidance, including social distancing.
