Mansfield Woodhouse student who helped save neighbour's life recognised for his quick thinking actions

A student at Manor Academy in Mansfield Woodhouse has been recognised for his heroic actions when they stepped in to perform lifesaving CPR on a member of the local community.

While working in a neighbour’s garden, Ethan responded to a call for help from a local resident.

Upon arriving at the scene Ethan discovered a person unconscious, lying partly on the road and partly on the pavement.

As more people began to arrive to the scene, Ethan confidently took charge of the situation, explaining that the individual needed to be gently moved onto to a flat surface so that their pulse and breathing could be checked.

When Ethan could not detect a pulse or any breathing from the individual, he immediately began CPR.

Ethan was fortunately joined by two members of the public, a teacher from the local Leas Park Junior School and also a carer from Kingsmill Hospital. All three rotated between CPR sessions to ensure a consistent series of compressions.

Ethan later recounted that he completed somewhere between 600 and 800 compressions in the six minutes of waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

Prior to the arrival of an ambulance, Ethan had also begun to organise an attempt to retrieve the nearest from Defibrillator kit, using local knowledge to determine its location.

Fortunately, paramedics arrived at the scene with their own defibrillator kit which they used after confirming that the CPR actions of all involved had ensured that the heart of the person in distress was in a shockable rhythm.

The individual in question was then transported to hospital and after undergoing treatment is now considered to be in a stable condition and recovering well.

Members of the individual’s family have directly contacted Ethan to offer their thanks for his quick response to start CPR.

Ethan credits his knowledge of CPR to a course he attended by the East Midlands Ambulance course, which he attended after becoming interested in the prospect of becoming a paramedic due to witnessing their work with members of his family.

Speaking on the experience Ethan said: “While walking down the street I was faced with most people’s worst nightmare. I had to stay calm and jump in knowing what to do and I am proud to say I gave the injured person the best chance possible.

“If faced with the situation, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I would encourage everyone to attend a CPR/BLS training course as this can truly save lives.

“The comments from the individual's family have worth more than any reward. Hopefully you will see me in green soon as helping others is my passion.”

Manor Academy and The Two Counties Trust have also recognised Ethan’s actions.

Rob Gladwin, headteacher, said: “We are truly proud of Ethan and his actions. Ethan has gone above and beyond any and all expectations of a student in their local community.

“We are very lucky to have a student at the Academy who expresses our values in such a way publicly as well as display their bravery and confidence in way that has saved the life of a member of our community.”

After this experience Ethan hopes to further help the local community by setting up his own CPR Community workshops focused on the basics of CPR and the connection between performing CPR and the use of Defibrillators.
