Mansfield Town fans join forces for charity walk

The group hope to raise over £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK with the event, which will see them set off early ahead of their match against Crewe Alexandra, to walk '90 Minutes Plus Added Time' for charity.

Taking place on March 14, the fundraiser consists of four separate, five mile walks across the town before arriving back at the One Call Stadium.

The routes, which mirror the direction of the fan stands - facing north, south, east and west - all roughly take an hour and a half.

Supporters will be walking through Pleasley, Mansfield Woodhouse, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Ravenshead, then finishing up at their home ground to complete a lap of honour on the pitch before kick off.

Mick Edge has been busy organising the football inspired sponsored walk alongside fellow Mansfield Town follower, Mark Eastwood.

The 56-year-old expects roughly 50 friends, family members and football fans to join them on the walk and help them reach their £1,000 target.

He shared why prostate cancer was a cause that he wanted to support.

"It's something that men don't really talk about,” he said.

"My son lost his sight and we know how hard it is and we wanted to do something different.

"You read about it and when you start getting older it makes you think a little bit more to raise awareness for the charity."

Organisers, who are encouraging non-football fans to take part, have created a timetable to keep the walkers on track.

The group will embark on their 90 minute journeys at 12.45pm from the various start points around the town.

Mick explained why he hopes the walk can help the community get active.

"I wanted to keep fit and in the winter it's hard to make yourself want to walk places.

"Walking is helping keep me fit and in good health and that's all you can do really.”

The bus driver hopes that the sponsored march will help warn men about the prostate cancer warning signs.

"It's the awareness side of it and everyone at the football club are fantastic in helping us organise it," he added.

"They bend over backwards to help us because it's a community club."

It costs £10 to sign up to join the walk with all the proceeds being donated to Prostate Cancer UK.
