The 49 year old, who wants to remain anonymous, shops at the Mansfield Aldi, off Nottingham Road, and after a recent visit said: “I love Aldi, but that night there were about 10 customers, three not wearing masks.

"There was a large chap without a mask breathing down my neck at the checkout. I wanted to tell him to back off. I’m not one for confrontation but it upset me.

“I live on my own and self-isolate, shopping for myself and vulnerable parents. I felt unnecessarily exposed and compromised so I emailed Aldi. My health and my parents’ health may not mean a lot to selfish others but it matters to me. Mask wearing saves life.

"Other supermarkets police mask wearing - they have people on the door.”

Aldi’s response said: “There’s no requirement for anyone with breathing difficulties or disabilities to wear a mask and our store colleagues are aware of exceptions.“If a customer wishes to purchase restricted products, such as alcohol, they may be required to remove face coverings so that our colleagues can follow the Challenge 25 policy.

“All colleagues are provided with face masks and asked to wear them whilst working on the shop floor. If a colleague has a medical condition and unable to wear a facemask, they will be exempt.

"Colleagues working behind Perspex screens are not required to wear a facemask. We would like to thank our customers for complying with Government guidance and shopping safely with us.”

But the shopper said: “It’s one of the most underwhelming replies I have ever received. All they did was send out a cut and paste response. It has nothing to do with people buying alcohol or the staff at Aldi. It is important for people shopping to wear mask to help save lives.”

An Aldi spokesperson told the Chad: "To protect colleagues and customers, wearing a mask while shopping in our stores is mandatory, except for the small number of people who have a medical exemption.

"For a limited period, customers that forget to bring a mask will be provided with one, free of charge. Anyone without a medical exemption that refuses to wear a mask is not permitted to shop in our stores.”
