Mansfield museum closes with immediate effect over coronavirus fears

Bosses at the museum, on Leeming Street, announced the closure today (March 17), after the government advised residents to avoid "non-essential" travel and contact with others to curb the spread of coronavirus.

A statement on the museum’s social media said: “We are aware of the Prime Minister’s announcement yesterday regarding avoiding unnecessary social contact, including museums and galleries.

“Following on from this, Mansfield District Council will be closing Mansfield Museum’s doors with immediate effect. This is in line with other visitor attractions across the country.

“Thank you for your continued support and patience at this difficult and demanding time and we look forward to welcoming you back to our award winning Museum soon.”

Boris Johnson said in a briefing yesterday that people should work from home where possible as part of a number of stringent new measures.

Pregnant women, people over the age of 70 and those with certain health conditions should consider the advice "particularly important", he said.

People in at-risk groups will be asked within days to stay home for 12 weeks.
