Coronavirus does not discriminate. As I write this column our Prime Minister is in hospital undergoing tests after having the virus for more than ten days.

It is quite clear from the television pictures over the past week that Boris has been very unwell, and we have also had the news that his pregnant girlfriend Carrie also has the symptoms and therefore I wish both the very best.

On Sunday night, our Queen addressed the nation for only the fifth time ever.

Her message was a message of hope and unity during these difficult times.

Her Majesty evoked wartime memories by saying “we should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again. But for now, I send my thanks and warmest good wishes to you all."

I was incredibly moved by the speech and at the same time felt that as a nation we were all together in this battle against coronavirus, a battle we will win.

I also got chance to catch up with the chief executive of Kings Mill Hospital who, along with his team and staff, are doing a fantastic job and coping incredibly well to ensure the very best of medical care is available during a time when unprecedented extra demand is being placed upon them.

We owe a massive debt to our NHS and everyone involved in the care sector at the best of times, but this pandemic has made this really hit home.

This time 80 years ago, it was our armed forces fighting the enemy but this time round it is our front-line health workers and every single one should get a medal when this is over and done with.

Our school teachers and school staff also deserve a mention as they are the ones currently looking after the children of key workers so they can go to work and keep the nation functioning.

I was pleased to hear that shielded residents across Ashfield had started to receive their food parcels over the past week and even more pleasing was the amount of people that contacted me to donate their food parcels back to the cause which I made sure went to the most deserving people in the area. It really is heart-warming to see the generosity and kindness from our fellow man during this time.
