Resident to the street, Cherry Plume, said: “I came back from walking my dog this morning to find all my neighbours across the street out the front of their homes. Everyone kept within social distancing guidelines of course, and were telling any approaching vehicles to stop and turn around.

“The police and council were notified and a highway maintenance team arrived within the hour of the call being made. The highway maintenance team have since put barriers up and blocked the road.

“The highway maintenance team have told us that members from the water board are due to arrive at the scene tomorrow to carry out further investigations. Many of us living on the street believe the void will be much bigger tomorrow as the hole was definitely much bigger when we carried out the carers clap at 8pm.”

County Councillor Rachel Madden who represents Kirkby South said: "We reported this sinkhole to Via East Midlands as soon as it was raised with us. We've requested that they deal with this urgently. This is systematic of the state of our roads across Ashfield and the rest of our County.

"We wrote to highways bosses at the County Council last week and requesting that they front load the highway's maintenance programme for this year. This is an ideal opportunity to do so whilst our roads are quiet. They have so far not bothered to reply'
