Holly says her journey began after a lifetime of struggling with her weight.
From schooldays marked by bullying to years of relying on comfort foods like chocolate, cakes and crisps, Holly found herself stuck in a cycle of losing weight only to gain it all back again.
Takeaways and quick microwave meals became the norm, especially after long days at her desk‑based job.
She had been thinking about joining Slimming World for months, regularly reaching Thursday evening and telling herself she would ‘do it next week’.
But on March 13, she finally walked into her local group, anxious but determined.
She expected to feel intimidated but instead found a warm welcome that immediately put her at ease.
During her new member introduction, Holly was asked what had brought her in that evening.
She said: “I almost cried, I told them, ‘I don’t want to look at myself in the mirror anymore’.
"I knew I needed structure, support and accountability, and that’s exactly what I found.”
Holly had previously been on an NHS weight‑management pathway where surgery was discussed as an option, but after seeing early success with Slimming World’s approach, she asked to be discharged
She felt confident she could continue her progress without medical intervention.
One of the biggest surprises for Holly was how much of her favourite food she could still enjoy.
She’s always loved hearty meals — big bowls of pasta, homemade curries, chilli, and Sunday roasts — and she quickly discovered ways to enjoy them in a healthier, satisfying way.
Instead of ordering takeaways, she now batch cooks her own versions of her favourites, keeping the fridge and freezer stocked with dishes she can heat up quickly.
She still enjoys something sweet in the evenings, often choosing a low‑Syn chocolate bar or a bowl of fruit and yoghurt when she wants a treat.
The support she found in the group became a huge part of her success.
In the early weeks, Holly would choose a chair near the door in case her nerves got the better of her.
Over time, she grew more comfortable, eventually taking part in discussions, sharing her ideas and celebrating other members’ achievements.
She continued “The people in that room are incredible, their support keeps me going every single week.
“It’s not just a weigh‑in — it’s a community.”
Holly’s day‑to‑day life looks very different now.
She sleeps better, has far more energy and no longer struggles with the back pain that once caused her daily discomfort.
Climbing the stairs no longer leaves her breathless, and her fitness continues to improve.
She also says she’s rediscovered her love of buying clothes, something she avoided for years because nothing felt comfortable.
Regular walking has become a habit she genuinely enjoys, often heading out for half an hour after work to clear her mind.
She credits the simple routine with helping her stay focused and improving her mood.
Most importantly, Holly says she feels like herself again.
She said: “For the first time in years, I feel good when I look in the mirror.
"I still have goals ahead of me, but I’m so proud of how far I’ve come.
"I told myself I could do this, and I’m actually doing it.”
Her journey is still ongoing, but Holly is approaching the months ahead with confidence and a newfound belief in her ability to reach her healthiest, happiest self.
Holly attends Damian’s Kirkby Slimming World group on Thursdays at 5.30pm and 7pm at The Ashwood Centre, Portland Street.
