Kirkby school 'delighted' after its latest Ofsted report

Staff and pupils at a Kirkby school are celebrating after its latest visit from the Ofsted inspectors.

The West Park Academy on Vernon Road, Kirkby, had an inspection on July 14, and were rated ‘expected standard’ in all categories.

The report said that ‘pupils belong, achieve and thrive in this caring school community’ and ‘leaders have created a caring and inclusive culture, where pupils feel valued, supported and safe’.

Under Achievement the report said: “Most pupils, including disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, make positive progress.

“Staff provide effective support to help pupils keep up with their learning.

“Pupils generally take pride in how they present their work, although some inconsistencies remain in the quality of handwriting and early writing skills.”

And in the Leadership and governance category the report said: “Leaders have embedded a broad and ambitious curriculum and remain focused on improving attendance and increasing consistency in teaching.

“Leaders understand the challenges faced by many pupils and families. They work collaboratively with parents and carers to ensure that pupils receive the support they need.”

Principal, Sarah Baldwin, said: “I am absolutely delighted with our Ofsted report and immensely proud of everyone at The West Park Academy.

“For me, the most important part of the report is that inspectors captured what makes West Park such a special place.

“They described that we are a caring school where our children ‘belong, achieve and thrive’; where they are happy and safe and where relationships between pupils and staff are warm and positive.

“It is wonderful to see the report recognise so many of the things we are proud of, including the strength of our early years and phonics teaching, our highly effective pastoral support, and the care and commitment shown to our children every day.

“This is very much a team achievement. I am incredibly grateful to our children, our dedicated staff, our families and everyone else who plays a part in making West Park the school it is and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with all of the school community to build on this success.”
