Kirkby residents have their say on what should replace the town's Superdrug store
Kirkby residents have expressed their disappointment following news that the town’s Superdrug store is set to close.
The Low Moor Road store will close on March 7 bringing to an end years of trading in the town.
The decision to close the store comes three months after Boots also closed their Low Moor Road branch.
It was replaced by a community food shop with questions now being raised by residents as to what will replace Superdrug.

Hayley Harpham was in favour of a Greggs coming to town, saying: “I love Superdrug and shop in there often, but it is what it is.
“I don’t want to see any nail bars, barbers or junk shops that last 5 minutes. I think be good if it was a Greggs.”
Christina Chudyckyj is another local who will be sad to see Superdrug go.
“It is sad to hear this, I always shop in Superdrug when I need stuff. I would like to see better shops, not like loads of hairdresser and nails shops, but Kirkby being back as it was before.”
Philip Mitchell felt a Tesco Express would be a good fit, adding: “Obviously Superdrug is not financially viable to keep trading if the costs to run it outweigh the sales each day.
“It wouldn't be a bad size store for a Tesco Express. You've only got Morrisons as a supermarket and no competition in the town centre. The other option is Heron.”
Christine Evans was in favour of extending the Boyes located next door, while Nat Jones felt a kids clothes shop or cake shop would be a good idea.
Kirkby town centre now has few recognised ‘High Street’ brands with Ladbrokes, WIlliam Hill and Morrisons the most recognisable national businesses currently trading.
Instead the town centre is now top heavy with hairdressers and nail bars as more and more peope opt to do their shopping online.
Claire Grainger spoke for many of the town’s residents in hoping the vacant property isn’t turned into another hairdressers.
“I dont want anything to replace it,” she said. “It’s about the only decent shop we've got in Kirkby. Let me guess though, they've got another Turkish barbers lined up? There's not enough men with hair in Kirkby for all the barbers we've got,its a joke.”
Kelly Hannant felt the decision to close Superdrug was a sad sign of the times, saying: “Leave Superdrug there I shop in there all the time will be so sad to see it go. Kirkby has gone really down hill. It’s so sad.”
