The grand opening event showcased the theatre’s role as a dynamic new cultural hub for the region.
Guests were welcomed by Liz Barrett OBE DL, Principal of ATTFE College, alongside Lewis Taylor, Principal of Sutton Community Academy, who both highlighted the importance of creative spaces in fostering student growth and community engagement.
The evening featured a rich and varied programme of performances and presentations introduced by Simon Martin MBE, Executive Leader of ATTFE College.

Further performances from Centre Stage Academy and Sutton Centre Stage Group, led by Jack Burrows, brought energy and artistry to the stage, reflecting the theatre’s commitment to developing performing arts opportunities for young people.
A poignant moment followed with a tribute in memory of Vanessa Oxspring who worked in the Nottinghamshire arts and culture sector and was a lifelong fond supporter of local arts, delivered by Dianne Holmes of ATTFE College, honoring her contributions and legacy within the community.
Local leadership was represented by Councilor Matthew Relf of Ashfield District Council; He spoke on the significance of the theatre as a community asset and symbol of regeneration.
Also present was Andrew Quick, Head of Production at Nottingham Playhouse, another big supporter of Cornerstone Theatre. His roots go back many years with connections to the theatre itself and is very well known across the country for his senior management roles in theatre and production.
The official opening ceremony was conducted by Professor Veronica Pickering MBS HAC, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, who formally declared Cornerstone Theatre open, marking a milestone moment for the region, unveiling a plaque to be placed in the theatre.
Afterwards: Professor Veronica Pickering MBS HAC, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire said “It is an honour to officially open Cornerstone Theatre — a space that embraces creativity, learning, and community spirit. The evening concluded with words of thanks and a buffet reception, allowing attendees to celebrate and connect in the new space.
The fabulous buffet was provided by the college’s Butterfly Bakery enterprise, who treated guests to delicious “99” ice cream cupcakes and fun clapperboard cookies — a real crowd-pleaser!
