Eleven year-old Lucy Harvey has so far raised £178 making the colourful masks with poppy designs and which she has been selling to family, neighbours and friends.

The Ashfield Comprehensive School pupil has made about 50 masks in the past few weeks, and has been selling them for a minimum donation of £3. The masks are to help keep people safe from coronavirus.

When her grandma, her “Momar” Sonia Buckley made masks for family members recently, Lucy decided she wanted to give it a go. Sonia also helped sell some of the masks at Bates Farm, where she works.

Lucy’s mum Grace Buckley said: “Lucy is amazing at sewing, she has done a fantastic job on these masks. They are bright and colourful with the poppies on them.

"She uses the sewing machine, she is much better than me at sewing. Her ‘Momar’ was the one who first showed her how to make them, then Lucy went into production! She bought all the fabric from shops in Sutton and Skegby out of her own money. She has made two different types of masks, and they are really good.”

Lucy is aiming to give the money to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

Mum of five Grace added: "Lucy had been worried that with Covid 19 this year no one would be selling much poppy stuff, so she wanted to do something to help.

“We are all very proud of her for what she has done, she has done it by herself and raised money for a good cause.”
