Since the Covid 19 crisis, Brierley Forest Golf Club (BFGC) closed its course, club house and cancelled its regular events including its quiz.

So, to bring its community together, the club decided to organise the ‘Great BFGC Barker Street Quiz’ for residents living on the street where the club is located.

The event ‘teed off’ on April 11, raising £400 - BFGC donated £100 and £300 came from Barker Street residents. Hand creams were also collected with proceeds going to Kings Mill hospital.

Natalie Matchett, who helps runs BFGC with husband Grant, father Paul Bough and club owner Andrew Fantom, said: “One of our members suggested the quiz on our street, where we could maintain social distancing if we set clear rules. We wanted to add a little joy to residents, particularly those social isolating alone.”

The club, established in 1993, has a long involvement with the Huthwaite community.

“We know the importance of what our sport means to those that play, many have individual reasons for their own or teams sporting achievements and development, for or physical or mental health and well-being” said Nat, who also works in the NHS.

“We wanted to consider those affected financially by Covid19, we suggested people could also donate spare hand creams for NHS staff – with constant washing, hands easily become dry, cracked and sore.”

Two buckets were duly decorated with rainbows and ‘thank you’ to the NHS, and placed in the middle of the street where people could take turns to donate.

Nat said: “We didn’t know if anyone would show, with trepidation we set up, and boy did they show! We couldn’t believe it! The street was full with family members outside their doors, 2m apart armed with papers and pens and their generosity was amazing!“What we witnessed will go down in history for us. It was like our community had reborn in a shared sense of purpose, unity and togetherness. Thank you Huthwaite!”

The quiz winners were the residents from no 8. The evening ended with songs and dancing – at a distance!
