How a Meden Vale football gathering united communities through inclusion
A grassroots inclusive sports event hosted in Mansfield has highlighted the life-changing impact of pan-disability football, proving that the true value of community sport stretches far beyond scores and silverware.
The local community became a focal point for regional grassroots sports on August 9 as teams gathered for an inclusion football event hosted by the Meden Vale Marvels.
The weekend brought together dedicated pan-disability clubs from across different regions, including Lincolnshire's Lincoln Invictus Inclusive FC and Merseyside’s multi-award-winning Bootle Bucks Inclusion FC (proudly partnering with JRD Inclusion).
While the teams thoroughly enjoyed a fantastic day of football, the event served a much greater purpose: celebrating community, belonging, and the essential support networks that keep families afloat.

For children and young people with additional needs or disabilities, mainstream sports environments can sometimes feel isolating or out of reach.
Specialized inclusion clubs completely rewrite that script.
They offer a safe, judgment-free space where young people can build deep friendships, grow their confidence, and feel a profound sense of identity as part of a team.
Crucially, the impact stretches far behind the pitch.

For parents, carers, and volunteers, these weekend gatherings serve as an essential lifeline.
Standing on the sidelines creates a unique peer-to-peer support network, allowing families who face similar daily triumphs and challenges to connect, share experiences, and find a community that truly understands them.
Organisers and volunteers from the visiting Bootle Bucks family – who affectionately call themselves the ‘Bootle Ducks’ – reiterated that days like the one in Meden Vale are about showing what happens when a community puts its heart into the right place.
As the participating clubs return to their home regions – with the Bootle contingent even preparing for an international inclusion tour to Belfast next month – the message left behind in Nottinghamshire is clear.
True success in grassroots sport isn't measured by the trophies on a shelf, but by the smiles on the children's faces and the inclusive family spirit that unites communities.
