Dominic Fitzpatrick, of Huthwaite, was visiting his mother Therese Lecoutier at her Ladybrook Lane home – shortly after finishing his shift at King’s Mill Hospital – when the thieves struck at around 8.45pm on Monday, March 8.

They made off with the 29-year-old’s new Peugeot Tweet 125 moped – valued at £2,500 – leaving Dominic distraught.

Parts of the bike were later found on a field on Armstrong Road in Mansfield and other bits in Yeoman Hill Park in Mansfield Woodhouse.

Dominic has since had to buy a second-hand bike to get to the hospital – where he works in dementia care – and to visit his 60-year-old mum, who has health issues.

“The response to the Chad story online was phenomenal,” he said.

"I have had so many kind offers of money . . . complete strangers contacted me to say they can sort me out with a new moped.

"I feel a bit embarrassed actually. I don’t want people to think I am asking for help, but my friends said people want to help you, so accept it.

"People have been so kind. I just want to say thanks.”

Dominic also revealed how he has had to use money set aside for his mortgage to buy a replacement machine.

“I have also got to pay the excess on the insurance, I’m down about £1,000,” he said.

"People have been amazing, I am very grateful. I have been told that there might be CCTV of the bike being taken. I am waiting to find out more.”

A GoFundMe page has also been set up by friend Zoe Stevens to help him on his way.

His colleague Lucy Wright said: “I have worked with Dominic on the ward and he always made us all smile when we didn't want to and has been dedicated and assisted the elderly and Covid patients during the pandemic. He is truly a special person and deserves all the help.”
