Heartbroken family pay tribute to 'ever-smiling' former bus driver who died at Retford level crossing

The family of an ‘ever-smiling’ former bus driver who died at a level crossing near Retford have paid an emotional tribute.

Roy Codd was sadly pronounced dead at the scene of a collision on October 20, aged 73.

In a heartbreaking statement released today, his grieving son and daughter paid tribute to the ‘popular, care-free’ figure who they said was known by many in the area as an ‘ever-smiling’ bus driver.

They also spoke movingly about how how he had been reunited in his death with ‘the love of his life’, their mother, Judith, who had died two years earlier.

“We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of our popular, care-free father, known to most as Blue.

“Two years ago our dad lost the love of his life, Judith, our mother, who he is now reunited with. He was a dedicated father and husband and we are still coming to terms with his tragic and sudden passing.

“He married our mother in 1977 after they met working for British Ropes, he then went on to work as a bus driver for East Midlands/Stagecoach for 30 years before retiring in 2012.

“Having lived his whole life in Retford, he’ll also be sorely missed by all that knew him in the area where he’s most known being an ever-smiling bus driver.

“We would like to ask that our family's privacy be respected at this time and for us to be allowed to grieve and remember dad in our own special way.”
