Fraud experts from Nottinghamshire Police shared their expertise on radio as they took part in a BBC roadshow event.

Cyber Protect and Prevent Officers Kirsty Jackson and Dale Richardson were taking part in the BBC’s Scam Safe Roadshow in Nottingham last week.

Held at the central library on Friday, November 28, the event was the final in a series of public events across the UK in partnership with Trading Standards, UK Finance and the Open University.

Each roadshow was supported by representatives from major high street banks, cyber experts from local police forces, as well as other expert from Trading Standards teams.

Visitors received free expert advice and had the opportunity to take part in scam savvy quizzes to test their personal data resilience and potential exposure to fraud.

Kirsty and Dale – each with many years of experience between them – gave a live interview to BBC Radio Nottingham and appeared on television.

During that interview they urged viewers to think about their exposure to fraud – and the many potential risks posed by their various online activities.

Of particular concern at the moment is a national rise in mobile phone related frauds – whereby thieves are plundering victims’ online accounts after stealing or gaining access to their phones.

Speaking after the event, Kirsty said: “Cyber and online fraud is a growing threat and that can have a devastating impact on victims.

“As with many things in life prevention is very much better than cure when it comes to fraud, which is why we work so hard to educate people about the various unseen risks they face in the virtual world.

“The very best way to do that is to engage with people face to face – and if necessary support them to put in place a few immediate actions to better protect themselves.

“This event – and the media opportunities that came with it – were a great way for us to do that.

“We all had a lot of fun and – more importantly – were able to get some crucial information out to a lot of people.”
