Explore facets of life in new exhibition at DH Lawrence Museum in Eastwood

The latest exhibition at the DH Lawrence Museum’s gallery in Eastwood is The Optimist’s Incomplete.

Produced by SEVHAGE ABC4DE, TransitUs, and BBAAF, and curated by Su’ur Su’eddie Vershima Agema, the exhibition delves deep into themes of life such as love, memory, and unfinished becoming.

Inspired in part by Lawrence’s poetry and literary oeuvre, the exhibition explores a broad range of themes and covers varying degrees of optimism and what it means to be or not be through photography and poetry across its key themes of love, (dis)trust, memory, nostalgia, sensuality, migration, inheritance, fracture, healing, and unfinished becoming.

Reflecting the ever-changing nature of life itself, the exhibition will shed some of its original installations after four weeks to be replaced with others – the installations then becoming available for sale at the museum as one-of-a-kind pieces alongside poetry books.

Music will form part of the exhibition too, completing an immersive experience for viewers.

Exhibition curator, Su’ur Agema, said, “I am excited by the range of voices and creative forms coming together in this exhibition and by the possibilities that emerge when various art forms are placed in conversation with each other.

"We hope the exhibition will inspire reflection, spark new ideas, and create space for meaningful conversations, collaborations, and friendships across cultures and communities.”

Carolyn Melbourne, museum and collections officer, dded: “The gallery space at the museum continues to expand the museum’s partnerships.

"I’m very excited that it can now platform work by this collective of creatives, for what will be a very meaningful exhibition.”

The free exhibition is at the museum on Victoria Street until September 13 from 10 to 4pm, Thursday to Saturday.
