Charity pub crawl from Sutton to Mansfield in memory of 'extraordinary, brave and courageous' woman

To help raise money for the hospice that cared for his mum in her final days a Mansfield man is taking part in a charity pub crawl from Sutton to Mansfield.

After a successul event last year, Dean Roe has once again planned a pub crawl from Sutton to Mansfield, to raise money for John Eastwood Hospice after his mum, Caril Reid, spent her final days there.

Dean said: “Last year one of my friends gave me the idea of a pub crawl, Mara-fun. And with some support, off we went, and we ended up raising about £1,100. So I’m reigniting the Mara-fun 2026 due to how well it went and I’m pushing for bigger and better this year in the hope we can smash the fundraising target for the hospice.”

This year’s event is taking place on May 30, including ten venues, starting at noon The Swan on Devonshire Square in Sutton. There will be live entertainment at each venue. To take part you are asked to make a £20 donation, and you will also be able to make donations along the crawl.

The pub crawl is in memory of Dean’s mum, who sadly passed away after a battle with cancer.

Dean said: “This is about one extraordinary, brave and courageous woman. This woman was an amazing carer for majority of her life and an outstanding mum and grandma.

“In 2018, mum nearly lost her life to pneumonia and this caused huge scaring to her right lung.

“Since then, mum was subject to a new programme which scanned her lungs annually and in January 2024 we found out mum had an 8cm growth on her right lung, which had grown from the scar tissue weak spot.”

After a few months Caril made the decision to stop her treatment and try and enjoy the time she had left with her family.

Dean said: “We planned stuff and went on family trips to make memories the best we could once her immune system had returned.

“We got just over a month before she started to decline. Eventually going from a bungalow, to in and out of hospital for weeks on end, to then a care home.

“She only had a short stay in the home before she was admitted again to the hospital as she'd gone downhill and her next stop was John Eastwood Hospice.

“Now what can I say about this place, absolutely outstanding. She was only in this place for four days, but since having mental issues due to the cancer, she never felt more at peace until she was in here.

“They were amazing, beautiful people who put her at ease constantly.

“And when the day came in when she was expected to go, they called us in good time and we were able to be with her during her passing.

“Even with me and my sister, this amazing place couldn’t do enough for her. The nurse on day shift, Louise, gave us memory bears, asked if we wanted handprints doing and gave us memory hearts.

“This made what we were going though that little bit more comforting.

“They couldn’t do enough for me and my sister while we were by my mum’s bedside for her final day, even after her passing.

“This blew my mind that they offer all this without ever expecting anything in return. This got me thinking, what could I do to raise money?”

As well as the pub crawl last year, Dean also took part in The Wall Ultra Marathon, 70 miles through Hadrian's Wall country, however he didn’t manage to complete it, so he is taking on the challenge again on June 13.

Dean said: “Although its coming up fast to two years without my mum, the drive to keep her memory alive in support of the hospice is what keeps me going through the pain.”
