5. Huthwaite
Huthwaite, an Ashfield village close to Sutton, was once home to New Hucknall Colliery, which employed 500 miners at its peak. It is now probably best known for the picturesque Brierley Forest Park, which is a haven for wildlife, walks, cycle trails, woodland and wetland areas. Jordan, of Newton Fallowell, says: "Huthwaite is also close to Derbyshire, which means it is between two very large areas, so when properties come on to the market, it is always going to be busy for any estate agent. The average price of £170,000 is affordable too, helping to create demand." Photo: Eric Gregory
6. Mansfield Woodhouse
Mansfield Woodhouse is a settlement of just under 20,000 people that was founded before even the Roman Empire. It once had its own council before merging with Mansfield but remains proud of its own identity, with a number of schools, sports clubs and its own railway station. Its economy has revolved over the years around quarrying, mining (via the former Sherwood Colliery that closed in 1992), farming and textiles. Jordan, of Newton Fallowell, says: "Mansfield Woodhouse is one of our busiest areas to sell and rent in. It has everything families need, backed by attractive prices, amenities, transport links and walks. The average house price is £185,000." Photo: Submitted
8. Rainworth
Rainworth, or 'Renneth' as many locals prefer to pronounce it, is a traditional village with a population of about 8,000 that sits next door to Blidworth. Its pit, Rufford Colliery, closed in 1993, but its miners' welfare remains. One claim to fame is that it is where notorious killer Donald Neilson, alias the Black Panther, was caught in 1975. Jordan, of Newton Fallowell, says: "Rainworth is a little gem. It is popular with families who especially like the outdoors due to its walks and trails nearby. The average house price is £175,000-plus." Photo: Submitted
