People urged to keep pond clean

Traffic cones, a shopping trolley, bottles and needles were amongst the rubbish cleared from the banks and waters of the pond by staff from Mansfield District Council, who also cut back overhanging trees.

The Carrs, which is one of nine Local Nature Reserves in the district, attracts a range of wildlife, including nesting birds, swans, ducks, Canadian geese and a variety of fish.

Coun Philip Shields, portfolio holder for the environment said: “This is an ongoing, long-term project to clear the Carrs and restore its natural beauty.

“We are working alongside the Friends of the Carrs to bring about major improvements.

“However, we cannot do this alone. We want people to respect this environment and stop throwing rubbish into the pond.

“This behaviour is completely unacceptable and makes our job a lot harder, not to mention the eyesore it creates.

“This is a nature reserve which deserves to be protected for the benefit of the wildlife and responsible park users.”
