Paramedics called after bus passenger floored by braking driver

Passengers jumped in shock as the woman, in her sixties, stood to get off the Pronto bus from Nottingham to Mansfield this morning (Monday, February 1) only to be sent flying toward the windscreen as the driver breaked suddenly.

The woman hit her head and shoulder and paramedics were called to the scene. No other passengers were hurt.

Trentbarton said the incident likely occurred to avoid a collision with another car, and advised passengers to remain seated until the bus stops.

A spokesman said: “Our pronto bus this morning required assistance from paramedics for injuries sustained to a customer on board.

“We haven’t reviewed the CCTV footage yet, but it would appear that the driver had to brake hard in order to avoid a collision with a car in front who had also broke hard.

“Our buses are fitted with up to eight CCTV cameras covering internal and external angles. In these situations, the general manager at the Sutton depot will review all the footage and speak to the driver. If the footage has shown our driver to be at fault, then appropriate action will be taken.

“The safety of our customers and drivers are our number one priority. We have one of the youngest fleet of buses in the country, fitted with smart technology to assist the drivers in these situations. We also advise customers to stay seated until the bus has stopped to avoid these incidents.”

Emily Dunn, of East Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “We were called at 8.20am to Nottingham Road reporting a female who had fallen on a bus.

“Our ambulance crew arrived on scene and assessed the patients. She was taken to Kings Mill Hospital.”
