Papplewick historians celebrate 50 years of marriage

History is a much-loved and shared interest of a Papplewick couple who celebrated their golden wedding recently.

Stanley and Mavis Ellis are well known across the Dispatch district for their involvement in the area’s history and for their past activities and employment.

During his career, Stanley worked at Hucknall’s Barclay’s Bank and is a past president of the Sutton and Skegby Football League as well as being a member of Oakmere Park Golf Club for over 20 years.

Meanwhile Mavis has spent her years writing a numberof books from a novel to a historical collectionfor Hucknall Parish Church .

“When my late mother first saw St James’ Church she remarked to my father ‘what a perfect place for a novel’,” explained Mavis. “Years later I went on to write a novel featuring the church called A Portrait of Allegra.”

More recently Mavis has embarked on researching the life of Elizabeth Smith.

“I am fascinated with local history and Elizabeth was from Broomhill in Hucknall who became the Royal Housekeeper to Queen Victoria at Osborne House,” added Mavis.

The couple, who live on Mansfield Road, was married at St James’ Church, Papplewick on Saturday 31st August 1963 by the Rev H.T. Pritchard.

They went on to have a daughter called Angharad who now lives in Oxfordshire.

Visiting historical sites of interest has kept the couple busy during their retirement. Tours have included the battlefields of Belgium and exploring Pearl Harbour.
