Paedophile jailed for 20 years could now '˜open the floodgates' says abuse survivor

The conviction of a paedophile who preyed on youngsters at a Nottinghamshire children's home could now open the floodgates for prosecutions, an abuse survivor has said.

Andris Logins, 57, has been jailed for 20 years today after being found guilty of 17 charges, including rape and indecent assault, relating to Beechwood home dating back to the 1980s.

He had denied all charges but was found guilty by a jury at Nottingham Crown Court.

Former Forest Town man, Mickey Summers, who himself was abused while in care in the 1960s and is now campaigning for justice for him and others, says the landmark conviction could now be the trigger.

He told the Chad: “I’m over the moon, and as far I’m concerned the precedence has been set.

“This house of cards is now set to fall.

“This vindicates everything that we have been campaigning for. I came back so I could get justice, and even my own perpetrator does not come to trial, I will have seen some justice, and for that I’m grateful.”

Logins is the first carer to be jailed following investigations by Nottinghamshire Police into abuse at more than 10 care homes around the county.

This includes former homes in Mansfield and Ashfield.

Operation Daybreak was launched in 2010 to look into allegations of abuse at Beechwood in Mapperley.

However, former residents at other homes began to step forward to say abuse had been widespread, which led to Operation Xeres being launched looking at other homes.

Police admitted in January that more than 70 potential perpetrators had been identified from 96 people, with more than 196 allegations dating back as afar as the 1940s.

And while Mr Summers has welcomed the jailing of Logins, he says judges should consider the victims when sentencing predatory paedophiles who had worked at children’s homes.

He added: “We have suffered a life of this and the sentences should reflect this.

“They should be set a minimum tariff and that should be life.”
