Our Jackie is new Sheriff of Nottingham

Coun Jackie Morris was bestowed with the honour and title in an official dedication ceremony held on Sunday at St Mary’s Church in the City’s Lace Market.

The service was attended by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Coun Ian Malcolm, and conducted by the Rev Christopher Harrison and the sermon was given by Canon Eddie Neale, who was once vicar of St Matthew’s Church, Bestwood Estate.

Those present included members of the Friends of Bulwell Bogs, with which Coun Morris is actively involved.

The new Sheriff and her husband and escort, the Rev Andy Morris, were guests of honour at a reception at Nottingham Council House following the service.

She said she was really looking foward to her term in this famous and time-honoured office.

She said her main twofold aim was to promote Nottingham’s economic growth to create jobs and to encourage community activities and voluntary service.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to bits to be selected by my colleagues,” added Coun Morris. “It’s very exciting and such an honour.”

The Sheriff’s role is ambassadorial in promoting Nottingham as a destination to visitors for short breaks, conferences, business and shopping and to encourage residents to use the facilities in the city and county.

But Coun Morris is also hoping to use the role to raise awareness of a cause close to her heart.

“I want to help people better understand the issues and implication surrounding domestic violence.

“It is a complex and indepth subject and I want to offer more support and increase awareness across the district about this subject in my new role.”
