Maybe it’s because our winters seem so long, that we love our summers so much. These long, bright days and evenings are just what the doctor ordered.
But – and there’s always a but – while we’re soaking up the sunshine we also need to be aware of the need for responsible drinking.
In summertime, it can be very pleasant to sit outside in the fresh air with a favourite tipple, chatting with friends and feeling at one with the world. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
It’s drinking too much that can be the problem, which is a pity because responsible drinking is still good fun. Safe is not boring.
Taking care with the amount of alcohol we consume isn’t just about us. It’s about the people we love and the people around us. Too much alcohol can lead to rowdiness, anti-social behaviour and worse. None of us want that at our door, whether we are the perpetrator or the victim.
So the message is: keep your own intake down and steer clear of those whose behaviour is affecting other people.
We also need to remember to take care of our property when the sun lures us outside. Lock those doors, close your windows and make sure that while you are enjoying a BBQ in the garden, some opportunist burglar isn’t inside your home rifling through your wallet, relieving you of your laptop or taking your car keys to steal your car.
Whether it’s summer or winter, keep your handbag, wallet and car keys out of sight. The sight of portable valuables in easy reach can be all the invitation a burglar needs to break in – or simply put an arm through an open window – and make a grab for them.
By getting into the habit of following simple safety measures we can avoid the distress that inevitably occurs when criminals invade our territory.
Summer is for enjoying, not for regret.
