Mayor is so proud of Mansfield's response to Covid and lockdown

Thanks to the combined efforts of the council, key workers, voluntary groups and sensible compliance by our communities, Mansfield has had one of the lowest Covid-19 infection rates in the country.

This has not happened by accident.

The clear communications during every stage of the crisis, followed by meticulous planning and operational delivery across the district, has resulted in Mansfield being named one of the top ten places in the UK best placed for recovery according to the Centre for Cities report.

As a town we have adapted to the restrictions in place and ensured that we have stayed safe and alert.

The council has done everything within its power to sustain businesses through these uncertain times, so far delivering more than £18.5 million of Government grants to 1,586 businesses and advising industry with training and support webinars.

I am so proud of how we have all looked after the most vulnerable in our society.

The council is delivering food parcels to support the Trussell Trust, the Beacon Project and Bellamy Food Share with staff, contacting people identified by GPs to maintain their mental wellbeing, finding accommodation for the homeless and putting help in place to assist them on their journey to overcome drug, alcohol, mental health and substance issues.

Mansfield District Council’s community response network crowdfunding appeal raised £35,691 to assist numerous charities throughout the covid-19 crisis, including young people with additional needs, domestic abuse organisations and many other established church and community groups.

So with the district starting to return to the ‘new normal’ and with shoppers and people coming back in to the town centre, we have reason to start to be optimistic.

People are starting to make the most of the shops and services in Mansfield with footfall on the increase – I hope this continues.

Now is the time for us all to shop local and keep our money in Mansfield’s economy.

If we all support each other then we can come through this pandemic in a strong position.

The council submitted an excellent bid for the Future High Streets Fund at the beginning of June and is hoping it merits the full £25 million.

Work has also started on the town centre masterplan and our submission for the Government’s £25 million Towns Fund.

There are several key sites in the town that we are optimistic we can regenerate.

The sun is starting to peak through the clouds, we are getting there, so remember the rules, stay safe and together we will succeed.
