LETTER: Worthy of street name recognition

I am sure I speak for many people who travel up and down Chesterfield Road when I agree with David Stafford’s letter that it’s good news that two sites there will be used to build new homes.

As someone who is rapidly approaching retirement age I am looking forward to the supported accommodation coming to Brownlow Road. I’ll be putting my name down for a bungalow just as soon as the waiting list is opened!

The prospect of having someone else taking responsibility for the maintaining my home rather than me having to worry about the upkeep of my property in my old age is very reassuring I must say.

I found Mr Stafford’s idea about the naming of streets on these new estates a good talking point.

Mansfield Council seem to have dropped the habit of naming places after well-known local people in recent years.

I think the town’s leading citizens ought to be honoured in the way he suggests, but I would include politicians, our last two MPs for example, Lord Taylor and Don Concannon.

After all Stafford Street, Harrop White and Mellors Roads, and Ethel Wainwright school were named in honour of former councillors and those places aren’t on anyone’s list of no-go areas are they?

A couple of people from the world of music I feel deserve recognition are, firstly, the much-loved and missed Pamela Cook from Cantamus, and the other is the young man we knew in Mansfield as Shane Fenton.

However I’m not sure many people would be happy to live on “Stardust Street”, whereas “Alvin Avenue” has a certain ring about it doesn’t it!

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Who would you nominate to have a new street named after them?
