LETTER: Remembering my late father in photo

It was great to see the photo of the Mansfield cycling awards 1970 in Your Memories section of the Chad on January 31.

My late father Cecil Bridges is in the photo – he was the Mansfield road safety officer at the time.
He was a member of the Mansfield section of the cyclists’ club in his early years and in later life with other members Cyril Spicer, Stan Brearley, Malcolm Walter and Bob Roby, to name but a few, devoted much of their spare time to teaching local youngsters cycling road-safety skills to attain the cycling proficiency badge.

In the 1960s and ’70s, training was held in the old cattle market on Bath Street.
Later a purpose-built course was built at the top of Brick Kiln Lane, where they also trained motorcyclists before they took their test.
During this time they won a national award for their contribution to road safety with the award given in a national presentation night in London.

I am sure many of your readers will remember the annual road competition starting on the green on Langham Place in Ladybrook.
They were marked by observers at several junctions, traffic lights, roundabouts etc and prizes were given to the winners in each group. Happy memories.
