Mayor of Mansfield, Kate Allsop, Mansfield Independent Forum group leader, Councillor Martin Wright and UKIP group leader, Barry Answer, have written a letter in response to the criticims of the services at Mansfield District Council raised in a {http://www.chad.co.uk/news/local/comment-it-s-about-time-our-councillors-stopped-squabbling-and-put-the-voters-first-1-7540273|commentary article|Click here} in last week’s Mansfield Chad.

Last week’s Chad Comment contained several inaccuracies.

The council has formally responded on those matters and we trust the Chad will correct the statements made.

Where we do agree with the Chad is that all the councillors at Mansfield District Council should be working for the benefit of all residents, but not as the Chad suggests just “for the people who turned out to vote for them”.

COMMENT: Mansfield District Council response to the Chad’s comment

Our councillors work for all the residents in their individual wards and collectively across the district.

There are a number of other assertions made in the column that are also incorrect.

We don’t get together once a month, but in fact on a formal basis just five times a year.

Importantly all of us, and the councillors within our groups, meet very regularly in formal committee meetings and group sessions where the key issues that face the council are discussed.

Regarding the point about arguments over banning Twitter – in fact it was social media in general in council meetings is misleading.

That debate actually took just seven minutes out of a council meeting which lasted two hours and 35 minutes.

We have differences on a number of issues. But no one should believe the Chad when it says we don’t listen and are more interested in berating one another.

Behind the debate, which by the nature of things is often lively, is a profound desire to work to improve the performance of the council and as a consequence see our district improve.
