Getting Brexit done is just the start for this Government

As you might expect, ‘getting Brexit done’ has been at the heart of our first weeks back in Parliament.

Last Thursday the Withdrawal Agreement Bill was finally passed through the Commons with a huge majority, despite Labour continuing to vote against Brexit at every opportunity.

At some points during the debate it almost seemed like the election had never happened as Labour members continued to talk about their plans to delay and block things.

However, fortunately they no longer have the numbers or the ability to do so.

Now that the legislation needed has passed through the Commons, it goes off to the Lords for them to consider this week

It’s highly likely they will seek to make some amendments, but they can’t block it now and Britain will leave the EU on January 31.

The Government is making plans to mark the occasion, and for me (and many others out there I imagine) it will be a huge relief that the Government can finally deliver on the Referendum and move on.

As the Lord’s ponder Brexit this week, back in the Commons, we’re focusing on domestic issues by debating the Queen’s Speech from before Christmas, as well as looking ahead to the coming Budget.

It’s all good news as the Conservatives seek to write their election proposals in to law, including record levels of NHS funding.

The Budget looks set to entirely change the way Government invests across the country, rewriting the rules to end the focus on London, so that the whole country can share the proceeds of economic growth.

That means good news for new investment and infrastructure in our part of the world.

I’ll be working with my new Nottinghamshire Conservative MP colleagues to make sure the county get its fair share.

So far I’m really pleased with how this new Government is approaching things, and the Prime Minister is making all the right noises.

We’ve even managed to finally restore devolved Government in Northern Ireland after three years, which is fantastic news.

We need to turn this early promise in to action – there’s an awful lot to do.
