£1 children books on sale for World Book Day

Friday 7th March is a special day for children, young people and reading: it’s World Book Day, an annual event designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most important of all, reading.

On 6th March children of all ages will each receive a £1 voucher at their school, which entitles them to a free book.

A number of books costing £1 will be available in participating bookshops. It can also be redeemed against a book or an audiobook priced at £2.99 or more, but only in participating bookshops.

The participating bookshops in our area are The Bookcase at Lowdham and Scarthin Books at Cromford.

Schools located a long way from these shops may be planning alternative arrangements, such as holding a book fair.

The £1 titles on offer include ;“The Boy in the Smoke,” a young adult novel by Maureen Johnson who was recently crowned 2012 Queen of Teen in the UK, but actually lives in the USA.

She is a New York Times bestselling author and writes frequently on the subject of Young Adult literature for many publications.

“Terrible Trenches” is a book from the very popular Horrible Histories series by Terry Deary and Martin Brown.

It’s full of fascinating facts about trench life in the First World War on both sides of the barbed wire- from foul food and lice to how your own wee could save your life! This is suitable for age 7 and above.

Another popular series is about “The Worst Witch” which has been delighting children since 1974.

In “Fun with the Worst Witch” by Jill Murphy, (for age 5 and above), readers are invited to help Mildred Hubble and her best friend Maud to crack spells, cook up potions and solve wizard word games.

Those who enjoy reading James Patterson’s adult thrillers may not be aware that he also writes books for children. His £1 title is from his ‘Middle School’ series and is called “Middle School: How I got Lost in London.”

Rafe joins a school trip to London but he needs to find a way of avoiding the school bully, getting a certain girl to talk to him, and trying not to get lost. It’s suitable for age 9 and above.

There are lots of events connected to World Book Day taking place all over the country. At The Bookcase in Lowdham on Friday March 7th, Jane Streeter and children from the Lowdham C of E Primary School will talk about the project. Children from Lowdham School will share their own favourite books and love of reading with the audience. Owner of The Bookcase, Jane is taking over as the UK Chair of World Book Day from March 6th for one year. The event is at the Lowdham Primitive Methodist Chapel, Main Street, Lowdham from 2pm to 3.30pm. Tickets cost
