Mansfield mayor confident there is light at the end of the Covid tunnel

What a month we have had – tier two, tier three and now another lockdown.

I have to commend the council team which has responded rapidly to the ever-changing situation to provide support and guidance to businesses and communities.

Our community has a high proportion of over-60s with underlying health conditions, so we have to be extra careful and follow all the rules to bring the infection rates down before December 2.

The vaccine, which we hope will be rolled out over the next six months, gives us so much hope that life could return to normal.

We are poised and ready when lockdown eases to start the recovery for the entire district.

The council recently submitted its Towns Fund bid to the Government on behalf of the Making Mansfield Place Board, which features representatives from a wide range of partner organisations.

The board listened to ideas submitted by the public in the #MyTown consultation and requested funding for 13 transformational projects.

All are based around a green, healthy and ‘smart’ technology agenda to make the district the destination of choice for living, working and learning.

The plan is to breathe life back into our town centres by getting homes, businesses, council and health services there to increase footfall and spend.

More fantastic news is that the old bus station site, which has been standing derelict since 2013, has received planning permission and hopefully work on the hotel and leisure complex will start early in 2021.

This is a real vote of confidence in Mansfield.

Finally, although we will miss our brilliant Christmas lights switch-on event this year, we will do everything we can to boost morale and encourage community togetherness.

The focus is on supporting people who are in difficulty due to the pandemic.

You can help by supporting the council’s secret Santa appeal or by sponsoring a bauble on the Christmas tree in the Market Place.

There will also be Christmas fun in the online Festive Festival on November 28 and 2 – for details, click here.
