Mansfield folk have so much to feel proud about this year

We are not there yet but Mansfield’s infection rate has fallen below the UK average for the first time for months.

Furthermore, the vaccine has started to be rolled out and heading in and after Saturday’s match against Grimsby, the ‘Super Stags’ have only lost once in the last 10 games – so many reasons for optimism.

Almost every day, I find inspiration from the efforts, achievements, dedication and commitment of the residents of Mansfield.

A big ‘shout out’ to the organisers because it is so important to celebrate successes.

Be it Mansfield and Ashfield 2020, the Chad Business Awards or the Armchair Club’s Sport Recognition Awards, the true spirit of Mansfield shines through.

There are so many stories of selfless acts of kindness and people going to extraordinary efforts to help the less fortunate in our district.

Businesses, work colleagues, communities and individuals using their skills and enterprise for the benefit of others.

A special mention has to go to the Sports Awards as they epitomise all that’s good – coaches and team organisers using all their years of experience, quietly behind the scenes, to encourage our young people to extraordinary achievements.

It is fitting that in their 100-year anniversary, the council as trustees of the park, has approved the granting of a lease for Mansfield Harriers to return to the track at Berry Hill Park.

We welcome the Harriers’ commitment to encourage all our communities to use the facilities to take up sport and physical activity, which ties in with our aim to make Mansfield a greener and healthier place to live.

And I’m pleased to report that the council’s Secret Santa Appeal and Sponsor a Bauble appeal have both exceeded their targets thanks to your generosity.

You all have so much to be proud of.

Good times are around the corner but over the next few months and especially over the festive period, follow all the rules and stay safe.

Andy Abrahams is Mayor of Mansfield.
