Ashfield MP praises Government for listening to the people and taking the right actions

A few weeks ago, I co-signed a letter to the Attorney General asking for the case of the killers of PC Andrew Harper to be reviewed and taken back to court under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

I am pleased to see that the Attorney General has decided the sentence was unduly lenient and I hope that the sentences are increased to the maximum allowed in law which is life imprisonment.

I was also pleased to see that Government listened to concerns I and fellow MP’s raised about A-level grading.

Sometimes Government is accused of making u-turns but I would prefer to think that actually, it has listened to the people and made the right decision

Changing a decision and admitting you got it wrong is a sign of strength not a sign of weakness.

Once again, we have had illegal camps set up in Ashfield over the past few weeks.

There is new legislation on this coming to Parliament in the autumn but again I am disappointed to see how easy it is for travellers to be able to set up camp on our parks, something Ashfield District Council has done very little to stop happening..

After being alerted that Woodnook Park in Selston was another target, I took matters in to may own hands by blocking off the entrance with a concrete block.

I make no apologies for doing this and I accept full responsibility for my actions.

Evicting travellers costs thousands of pounds of council tax money, money that could be better spent on securing our parks.

I started my mining craft apprenticeship more than 30 years ago at West Nottinghamshire College in Mansfield and I was really pleased to be invited back last week to meet the principal and Mansfield MP Ben Bradley.

The college is set to benefit from a cash boost of £1.3 million which will be used to fund the new sixth-form centre and benefit students from across the Ashfield area.

This is on the back of the extra £2 million Kings Mill has received to invest in its A&E department to get ready for the winter.

Working closely with fellow north Nottinghamshire MPs is having some great results and proof that by working together we can achieve great things.
