Ashfield MP pleased to see Government getting tough on violent and sexual crime

Last week, I met with the justice secretary to discuss the new sentencing white paper which has just been introduced to Parliament.

This white paper proposes changes to the law which would see sexual and violent criminals spend much longer in prison and allow life orders for murderers under the age of 21.

I strongly believe that the longer a violent or sexual offender is in prison then the longer they have to be rehabilitated, the longer they have to reflect on their crime and the longer they are no longer a danger to society.

In Sutton, we have seen a number of arrests over the past week where police have put their own personal safety to one side to apprehend criminals.

Therefore we owe it to the police to make sure that once caught these people are sent away for as long as possible.

This new legislation will achieve this.

I was fortunate enough to meet with the Chancellor last Wednesday to badger him about extra money for Ashfield and Eastwood.

I have a long shopping list and the Chancellor knows how passionate I am about my home towns, which is why the treasury is looking at a bid for millions of pounds of investment for the area.

There are many other projects I am working on for the area and it has always been my goal to make sure we get as much investment as possible, as I think we have always been left behind.

You can be assured I have made myself known to the people running the country to make sure they all know where Ashfield and Eastwood are.

I am pleased to see that we are about to see more weekly flights of illegal immigrants being sent back to Germany, Italy and France.

The spate of recent illegal channel crossings has become an embarrassment and no MP has been more vocal than me on the subject.

Last week saw me re-start my outdoor advice surgeries.
